About SPAY

Union for the Protection and Development of Hymettus

The Union for the Protection and Development of Hymettus – SPAY was founded in 1992 with the aim of protecting the ecosystem of Mount Hymettus and developing it into a ‘green lung’.

To achieve its goals, SPAY takes a series of actions such as weeding tasks, disposing of flammable substances and litter, maintaining fire extinguishing systems, clearing and maintaining forest roads, repairing fire lookout towers, reforestation volunteer projects and a plethora of actions raising environmental awareness regarding the protection of Mt. Hymettus.

SPAY is the largest, purpose-driven Union in the country and comprises 10 contiguous municipalities located around Mt. Hymettus.

10 Municipalities - 1 Mission

Ten Municipalities in Attica united by a common mission; the protection of Mt. Hymettus from natural and
anthropogenic hazards as well as its development into a ‘green lung’.

Our people

The people of SPAY (employees, volunteers, colleagues and the Governing Council) are the foundation stone of the Union.

Their collective hard work is certain to yield the expected results and goals.

Shared Vision

We unite all the residents of Attica in a shared vision for the protection and revival of Mt. Hymettus.

Mutual Commitment

The mutual commitment that urged the creation of SPAY is the main ‘ingredient’ of our Union.

Respect

We respect the environment and seek to convey our values to our fellow citizens; young or old.

Selflessness

It is within our power to protect Mt. Hymettus and make it greener and more beautiful than ever, as it should be. We owe it to our children and the generations to come.

Paying tribute to the fallen

The Union for the Protection and Development of Hymettus, the municipalities and local volunteer teams protecting their respective regions, pay tribute to the fallen of the Mt. Hymettus fires.
